This Halloween it’s not black cats we should be frightened of, but fat cats.
Bank profits have soared and it’s been at our expense. As we said in our recent article, government decisions to respond to high inflation with increasing interest rates have allowed the big 4 banks alone to rake in over £30bn so far this year. Not only is this deepening the cost of living crisis and hurting the economy, it’s also leading to record CEO pay and hikes in dividends. This money is being squirrelled away into the pockets of the richest, and it’s not over yet.
Between now and 31st October, the big four banks will be announcing their latest quarterly profits – and they’re scarily big. Higher interest rates have treated the big banks to billions in unearned profits, while we’ve been tricked with soaring mortgage, rent and debt payments.
We’re asking for your help spreading the message this Halloween with our poster campaign, which we’re running jointly with PositiveMoney! We tricked or treated banks during their profit annoucements, since with over £40bn of profit so far this year, we figured they had enough to share.
