The Equality Trust has responded to new research published today by the Social Mobility Commission which found a quarter of low paid workers are permanently stuck in poorly paid jobs. Dr. Wanda Wyporska, Executive Director of The Equality Trust, said:

“The truth is we’ve become very good at creating low paid jobs, with little chance for progression. This isn’t anything to be proud of and it doesn’t represent an economy working for the many, not the few. 

“Many people, especially women and ethnic minorities, find themselves churned around in low pay jobs, unable to enjoy any semblance of security or stability. This is affecting the millions of children who are doomed to live their lives in poverty. At the same time, those at the top are raking in millions, often regardless of their performance. 

“We desperately need politicians with the guts and common sense to stand up for ordinary workers, and challenge this inequality. It’s the only way to build an economy that benefits everyone, and a society that isn’t hopelessly divided.”
