Fifteen policies to make London fairer

The Equality Trust and our affiliated local group My Fair London are working together to reduce inequality across London by working with residents to campaign for a fairer capital.

The UK is one of the most unequal countries in the developed world. Within the UK, London is by far the most unequal region. Income inequality is significantly greater in London than elsewhere in England, and London’s wealth inequality is even greater, with the richest 10% of households owning 50% of London’s wealth.

Inequality needs to be tackled at the national, regional and local level, with local authorities having a crucial part to play in this.

What can you do?

By entering your postcode and clicking “Find my Council”, in just a few minutes you can email your local council asking them to commit to The Fairness Fifteen, a list of recommended policies local authorities should adopt in order to reduce inequality at the local level.

These includes policies to:

  • Evaluate the likely impact of council policies on socio-economic inequality, as per the Socio-economic Duty, Section 1 of the Equality Act 2010.
  • Pay all directly contracted staff the real Living Wage (as set by the Living Wage Foundation) and ensure all council contractors are required to pay staff the real Living Wage.
  • Publish a plan to reduce the pay ratio between the CEO and the lowest-paid directly employed council worker.

Please forward any responses you receive from councillors or council staff to us at info@equalitytrust.org.uk.

Share this online action with neighbours, family and friends in your local area and across the capital to really put pressure on councils across London to respond.
