“There are a number of positive proposals in this manifesto that should reduce inequality. A 1p rise on all rates of income would be largely raised through the richest 50 per cent of households, and a reversal of cuts to Universal Credit’s work allowance would predominantly benefit poorer households. 

“It is also good to see all parties are now committed to improving corporate governance to deliver fairer outcomes. The commitment to the compulsory publication of pay ratios for large and medium businesses, and the introduction of workers on boards, would both help to reduce pay inequality. We’ve campaigned for these measures for some time.

“However, some proposals could go further. Proposed changes to council tax merely tinker around the edges, when root and branch reform is necessary. We would favour its replacement with a progressive property tax. Similarly, changes to Universal Credit are welcome, but another effective policy to reduce inequality would focus on reducing the withdrawal rate, to allow people to keep more of the money they earn.”
