“There are a number of proposals in the SNP’s manifesto that would help to tackle inequality across the UK. Firstly, it is extremely welcome that the SNP pledges to pursue legislation in the UK Parliament to commence the Equality Act’s Socio-economic Duty, which would require public bodies to consider the effects of their decisions on inequality. The Scottish Government has already set out its intention to introduce the Duty in Scotland, so support from SNP MPs in Westminster to extend the Duty across the UK should be well-received.

“The manifesto also promises to support several changes to strengthen social security, including uprating all benefits by inflation, and reinstating the work allowance in Universal Credit to allow low-income families to keep more of their earnings before support is withdrawn. These changes would predominantly benefit poorer households.

“However, it is disappointing not to see support for proposals to strengthen corporate governance within UK companies, particularly measures to increase worker voice and improve pay ratio transparency. Commitment to such measures would recognise the responsibilities of business in reducing inequality.”
