Government and Business Must Do More On Social Mobility

The Equality Trust has responded to today’s publication of the Social Mobility Index, which announced the top 50 UK employers taking the most action to improve social mobility in the workplace. Dr.Wanda Wyporska, Executive Director of The Equality Trust, said:

“It’s encouraging to see some firms are taking the initiative on social mobility, but it’s clear we need to go much further. Many professions like journalism, law and politics are still dominated by the rich. Where those from poorer backgrounds do squeeze in, they often face a pay gap with their wealthier colleagues.

“This isn’t just the fault of business, we need far more involvement from Government to break down barriers, and provide opportunities to all. That means systems of taxation and social security that help level the playing field, rather than forcing poorer children to sprint just to stay still. It also means creating decent jobs, with clear routes of progression.

“Inequality in the UK is rampant, and it is corroding our society. In large part it is due to the jobs that rich and poor people are expected to do. We cannot keep sifting the poor into low paid jobs, with the rich taking all the top roles. We cannot keep stifling potential to prop up a system that only benefits a tiny minority. If we want a fair society, and a modern economy, we have to tackle inequality.”
